January - In 2026, Native Love started off their year with a New Year Sobriety Walk for the community of Ignacio and surrounding areas. This has become an annual event in support of recovering alcoholics or those active in addiction. This day is meant to show support and a safe place for people to start their year off in a healthy manner.
This walk began in the 1990's by the late Saaswaniis Hiswaqs of the Klammoth Tribe. He was married to a Southern Ute Tribal Member and made Ignacio his home. He worked at SUCAP with a program called Peaceful Spirits. Through this program, he promoted sobriety for adults. Run Against Drugs Running Group will be gathering every Tuesday and Thursday to train and run as a group for the Run Against Drugs. This will be a local run in Ignacio Colorado, and Southern Ute Reservation. The purpose of starting this running group is to plan for another Run Against Drugs to Denver Colorado.
The bigger meaning behind the Run Against Drugs is to promote healthy living and mental health.
This Run originally began in the early 1900's for the youth in the Community of Ignacio CO, by Robert Buckskin a.k.a. Saaswaniis Hiswaqs e-gapu. Every year, the community and SUCAP would take students to run to Denver. On their journey they stopped in the small towns, where they were sponsored to stay in school gymnasiums. There was drug education and support for the youth by parents, SUCAP employees, and community who assisted in this journey to Denver. This was a way to spread awareness about the fight against drugs. When they made it to Denver, they were greeted at the State Capitol by many, ending their purpose for this run. After the run, youth were then treated to functions such as Eliche's and Casa Bonita.
MISSING AND MURDERED INDIGENOUS RELATIVES
Community Announcement
Native Love Sponsored a Gun Violence Prevention Community Discussion in the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation. This event was put on by Colorado Cease Fire and Sacred Lives Coalition. This Conversation was a safe place for students and community to open up about the Gun Violence that occurs on their reservation on a regular basis. We support the voices of the Community and will continue to support any further action needed for this very critical cause.
As a supporter of MMIR (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives) in Colorado, we attend regular meetings collaborating on ideas to create a four corners MMIR Communications Center. This will help inigenous relatives off and on the reservation. This will help Law Enforcement, Tribes, and Advocates so everyone is working together in real time to make efforts. Time is critical when a relative goes missing, and the goal is to have a quick response, as well as work together to bring them home safely.
